Your retainers have been made to help hold your teeth in their finished position. However, teeth are living tissue and can change as the years go by.

Hawley Retainers

  1. Place retainers very gently with your fingers: never bite to place your retainers. Don't flip or manipulate them with your tongue as this will warp or distort your retainers, or lead to breakage.
  2. The retainers are to be worn 24 hours per day for 6-12 months except when eating or brushing your teeth. The second year retainers are worn every night, and the third year one to two nights per week indefinitely.
  3. Retainers should be removed for sports activities (boxing, football, etc.), including swimming.
  4. Brush your teeth and retainers after every meal. Once a day use liquid dish soap to scrub your retainer. NEVER use hot water which can warp your retainer.
  5. Patients are seen less frequently in retention. After retainers are started, appointment intervals are 6 months and yearly. It is the patient's responsibility to contact the office for the appointment.

Care

Always keep your retainers in the case when they are not being worn. Keep out of direct sunlight and heat. Keep appliances away from pets. They will chew them. NEVER wrap them in napkin or leave them laying around. They can get lost or broken. Call our office immediately for an appointment to replace lost or broken retainers.
